Cameraffiti

Knowingly presented amidst the maelstrom of controversy regarding downtown COMO’s graffiti and security cameras, I offer this bit of content related eye candy.   Say what you will about graffiti as an art form, let alone its place within the municipality, it can be absolutely artful (like that being created in the above video).  “Defacement” aside, those quick to dismiss and condemn graffiti fail on a fundamentally empathic level.   That failing, at best, is the lack of crucial cultural insight in regards to the medium’s expression.  At worst, it is apathy to the art form’s cultural significance and implications.  Graffiti is, quite literally, the writing on the wall.  Although this is not intended to be a platform of property equilibrium, I do not apologize if it’s perceived that way.  However, if a building is tagged, the owner has every right to to react.  I just encourage that reaction to be thoughtful and deliberate, considering the potential artfulness and context as opposed to defaulting to its criminal intent.

I would agree – but 99% of the graffiti in columbia is not artful. It’s a black paint pen with some guy’s nick name. nice. but me writing my name on paper, or anything else, is just me writing my name. i don’t expect anyone to put it in a gallery. Now – i’ve seen graffiti that left me speechless. just not in columbia. perhaps these “artists” should watch your video, or better yet, visit and study up with actual artists.
